What to Expect

The Indian Ocean at its most beautiful hour

The dhow is one of East Africa's most iconic vessels — a wooden sailing boat with lateen sails that has traded along this coast for over a thousand years. Watching Mombasa's skyline and the old harbour from the water at sunset, on a boat that belongs to this history, is an experience unlike anything else the city offers.

We board at the Old Port in the late afternoon, sail out past the harbour mouth into open water, and drift with the wind as the sky shifts from gold to amber to deep red. Live taarab or bongo flava music plays softly on deck. Fresh cocktails, cold Tuskers, and Swahili snacks are served throughout.

This is the perfect evening for couples, small groups, or anyone who wants to end a day in Mombasa in the most memorable way possible.

What's On Board

An evening to remember

Authentic Dhow

A hand-built Swahili dhow with traditional lateen sails — not a motor vessel, not a replica. The real thing, still seaworthy and magnificent.

🍹

Drinks & Swahili Snacks

Sundowner cocktails, cold Tusker beers, fresh juice, and Swahili snacks — vitumbua, maandazi, and coconut crisps — served throughout the sail.

🎵

Live Music on Deck

A local musician plays taarab — the hypnotic Swahili coastal music of Arabic and African rhythms — as the sun sets behind you.

🌇

Mombasa Skyline Views

See Fort Jesus, the Old Port, and the Mombasa waterfront from the water — the best vantage point in the city.

📸

Golden Hour Photography

The light from the open ocean at sunset is extraordinary. Every photo looks like it belongs in a magazine.

🌙

Return by Starlight

We sail back after dark, the harbour lights reflected on the water. A quiet, unhurried return to the world.

Evening Timeline

How the evening unfolds

Exact departure time varies by season to align with sunset. We confirm your time 24 hours before sailing.

1

T–30 min — Hotel pickup

We collect you from your hotel in Mombasa. Cold welcome drink waiting in the vehicle.

2

Arrival at the Old Port

We walk you through the ancient harbour to your dhow. Your captain and crew welcome you aboard with cold drinks and snacks already laid out on deck.

3

Departure — sailing out of the harbour

The sails catch the afternoon breeze as we leave the Old Port. Fort Jesus and the historic waterfront slide past. The city slowly falls behind.

4

Open water — golden hour

We anchor or drift in open water as the sun descends. Music plays softly. Sundowner cocktails are served. The sky puts on its show.

5

After sunset — lights of Mombasa

We stay out a little longer as the city lights come on and the stars appear. No rush to get back. This is the best part of the evening.

6

Return to the Old Port & drop-off

We sail back to the harbour and drive you to your hotel. Most guests are already planning their next evening on the water.
