Book This Trip See All ToursWhat to Expect
Wasini Island sits just off Kenya's southern coast, close to the Tanzanian border, and has no cars, no crowds, and some of the most spectacular coral gardens in East Africa. We leave Mombasa early, stop at Shimoni to board a traditional dhow, and head out to snorkel with wild dolphins in Kisite-Mpunguti Marine Park.
After snorkelling, the dhow sails to Wasini Island for a long, lazy seafood lunch — crab, prawns, fish and rice served in the open air. The afternoon is yours: walk the island, visit the coral gardens on land, or simply sit by the water.
🐬 Dolphin sightings are very common but wild — we never guarantee or chase them. We observe respectfully from the dhow.
Trip Highlights
Snorkel in the protected waters of Kisite-Mpunguti Marine Park, where spinner and bottlenose dolphins are regular visitors.
Some of the most intact coral gardens on Kenya's coast — sea turtles, parrotfish, lionfish and more beneath the surface.
Travel between islands on a hand-built wooden dhow with a sail — the same boats Swahili sailors have used for centuries.
A legendary open-air lunch of fresh crab, tiger prawns, grilled fish, coconut rice and tropical fruit on Wasini Island.
Stroll the tiny car-free village, visit the ancient Swahili ruins, and see the raised coral gardens that give the island its name.
An optional stop at Shimoni to see the historic coral caves used during the Arab slave trade — sobering and important.
